In the spring of 1998, O3 Games was founded. The company started modestly in a small scale game developing games for the PC. After the release of "The Outforce" in 2000, O3 started looking for a new challenge. In Härnösand, a small town 370 km north of Uppsala, they found the already legendary Starbreeze Studios, a team of developers and artists well known within the industry. The two companies realized that a merger would be a wise and prosperous move, and in the autumn of 2001 Starbreeze Studios merged into O3 Games as their games development and R&D department. A new star on the gaming sky was born. The company was renamed Starbreeze late 2002.

Into the merger, Starbreeze brought "Enclave", a yet-to-be-finished fantasy action-game that had received some attention. Late summer 2002, the Xbox version of "Enclave" was released around the world.
Today, Starbreeze is one of the largest games developers in the Nordic countries. The company produces three titles in parallel and is developing on all major platforms of the market. Headquarters and R&D-department is situated in central Uppsala.
