The games media is cannibalising anything it possibly can in the lead up to this afternoon's 4pm reveal of the GTA V trailer. So, what the hell, so am I.The most hilarious spot at the moment is
CVG's quoting of analyst Michael Pachter's Tweeting (see???) regarding a market research firm's prediction that GTA V will be digital download only; a quote that ran under the headline: "
Researchers predict GTA V will be download only" in MCV.
The 'researchers' come from market researchers NewZoo and - to be fair - it's also quoted in
Industrygamers in terms of a 'report' and a quote from NewZoo CEO Peter Warman:
"There are a lot of reasons why publishers are pushing towards digital distribution of triple A games. Speaking out loud might harm the relationship with retail partners, but the benefits have become too large to remain silent about the desire to go completely digital. The ultimate objective being to launch games faster, create continuous revenues on a title and simply to make more money. Will retail disappear from the picture?
"Of course not. Retail will always remain an important channel to promote and distribute games. Retail has a strong hand to play when it comes to eyeballs and… boxes make a nice gift. Boxed games will not disappear, but what is in the box will. That is why the boxed GTA V version will contain a collectible piece of merchandise and a download code. No disc."
Anyway, CVG points out that Michael Pachter tweeted, "It is not possible that GTA V is digital download only, ZERO probability. 40% of 360s sold have 20Gb or smaller HDD. Rockstar in business to sell a lot of copies, won't do anything that compromises that goal. It's a profit deal."
So, there we go then.
