Summary
Bioware's celebrated Star Wars Xbox RPG has now made the not-too-difficult leap to PC, bringing the involving sci-fi adventure to the more serious gaming community. Just as you will have been hoping, Knights of the Old Republic (or KOTOR, as all the cool kids refer to it) plunges you into an expansive Star Wars universe, complete with a compelling storyline, considerable character development, intuitive combat system and, of course, lightsabers. Yay!
The game is set long before the Galactic Civil War, and tells of the beginning of an epic drama in the Golden Age of the Republic, more than 4,000 years before the events of the first Star Wars film. With the Galaxy reeling from a recent conflict with the Dark Lords, the ongoing battle between Jedi and Sith rages on.
You start out as just an ordinary guy - but an ordinary guy who has a knack for the Force, mind. As the story evolves, so do your powers, and soon enough, you become the last hope of the Jedi, as you lead a band of freedom fighters in an epic struggle to save the galaxy. Can you master the power of the Force? Or, alternatively, will you be tempted by the dark side? Either way, throughout the game, the choice is yours, and the destiny of the galaxy rests on your shoulders. Dream come true? We think so!
The massive roster of worlds that the game takes you to reads like the menu of an Indian restaurant, including the likes of Dantooine, Kashyyyk, Korriban, Manaan, and the more familiar Tatooine. Consequently, on your travels you interact with a diverse array of unique characters who all react differently to your actions and can thus assist or hinder your progress in a variety of different ways.
Heralded by many as 'the Star Wars game we've been waiting for', KOTOR does indeed offer the most immersive Star Wars experience to date. If you're a gamer and a fan of the George Lucas saga then you may as well consider this as film episode #2.5. But better than 1 and 2, obviously.
