When we get an email from our buddies at Rockstar entitled ‘Rockstar Games Announces Sunday Driver” you can imagine what goes through our collective brain before we read its contents. It must be a romp set in middle England, with a family man going to visit his mother-in-law. He flips out and there’s chaos on the roads. Or something.
Well, prepare to be somewhat disappointed. Sunday Driver isn’t even a game, it’s a movie. Exclusive to Sony’s PSP UMD format. Sunday Driver, according to Rockstar, “…is an all-access documentary film that chronicles the Compton/Watts chapter of California's low rider car club, The Majestics. Sunday Driver is a portrait of a community working together to build the ultimate customized vehicles while struggling to legitimize their lifestyle under close scrutiny of the authorities.” The only club we know of called Majestics is actually spelled Majestyks and it’s in Leeds. The last time we went there, we saw six fights and one man throw a glass at a fruit machine. This would make a great documentary too, but Rockstar’s eyes are seemingly looking for something far more 'urban' than our own.
"Films have always had a hand in influencing everything we create at Rockstar," said Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games, in a corporate statement. "Our goal was to create a film with the same cutting edge, uncompromising cinematic content that we strive for in our games. We are extremely proud of Sunday Driver as an evolution of the Rockstar brand into film."
And here Houser makes a valid point. The Rockstar brand is now massive, at least in the US and Europe, and clearly has the potential to break away from a videogame exclusive future. The fact that Sunday Driver will be on UMD means that it will get maximum exposure in both mainstream entertainment and game stores and thus provides a perfect testing ground for such a project.
According to Rockstar, Sunday Driver will be released this autumn, so we’ll let you know more about it in the coming weeks.
