Sony: UMD Library to PSP Go Digital

Upgrade path ahoy.

Sony: UMD Library to PSP Go Digital
Although Sony states that the new, UMD-free, PSP Go (the N-1000, tech fans) won't replace the PSP 3000 or any other PSP, it's obvious that some gamers will move from the older units. In fact, it's obvious that sooner or later the Go will indeed replace those units.

So, what happens if you've got a huge library of UMD games that are now unplayable - and you don't want to tote two PSPs around with you?

According to SCEA's Director of Hardware Marketing for Sony, John Koller speaking to Gizmodo's Mark Wilson:

"We're in the midst of putting together a good will program. We'll be unveiling that soon [because] we actually think there's a significant group that will be upgrading from the 1000...In the past, we've seen a 20-25% trade-up factor, and I assume that's going to be the case here. We've modelled that. So we're looking at a good-will program—a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterwards."

Yes, we're confused by "a short term good-will program that would continue for years afterwards" too.

You, Sony, shouldn't assume anything. The amount of times you have u-turned stuff, frankly I don't trust you until I see something solid.

Don't get me wrong PSP Go looks nice, but personally like buying UMD cheap. Sony have thing about keeping prices high that I dislike, you only need look at PS3 and PSP 1/2/3000 for that. If they were to drop PSP 1/2000 to say £50-60, considering how long they've been on sale, then I'd know Sony are serious. Highly unlikely unfortunately.

Fat chance of that when the DS Lite is still selling for about twice that price.

The fact is, all of these things are priced to maximise profit. If a lower price meant selling more hardware units and subsequently selling more games which meant more profit over all then the hardware price would drop tomorrow.

the thing that still worrys me about the psp go is the fact that there is still no playstaystion network card in the uk and if there is still no card when it come out there is going to be a hell of a lot of people that will not be able to use it well till it gets hacked which we all no will happen as it all ways dose
