GDC: Kojima Looks West for Next Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid creator, Hideo Kojima, has said that he is interested in embracing a Western approach to development for the next title in his esteemed franchise, marrying it to what he sees as the more design-focused Japanese method.

"In the future of Kojima Productions, I want to mix the Western and Japanese way of designing. Using hardware technology, software technology, and also game design, to overcome our obstacles. That's how I think we'll reach the next Metal Gear Solid. So I want to really challenge this wall of impossibility together with American and European developers, who really specialise in software design", Kojima told an audience at the Game Developers Conference.

Explaining how he sees Western development, Kojima said, "There's a new trend in the West, which is a more software-based, technology-driven game design. In that sense, they overcome hurdles with software technology itself. For example, ideas like being able to run wherever you want with no loading screens, or being able to ride any vehicle in the game, or being able to destroy everything you see."

Kojima isn't the only games creator in Japan with an eye on the West. Square Enix, for one, has recently pushed further West with a new LA Studio, an agreed purchase of Eidos and a partnership with American RTS developer, Gas Powered Games.
