As SPOnG mentioned earlier this week, it looks as though Nintendo Company Limited is looking into the possibility of
rereleasing GameCube titles for the upcoming Wii platform, complete with reworked graphics and an adapted control scheme to take advantage of the WiiMote features, news that walks the line between interesting and, we have to say, a tad worrying.
Speaking to Japanese mag Nintendo Dream Nintendo development superstar Shigeru Miyamoto noted, "The machine is based on GC... We'll be upgrading the development tools, but GameCube code can be used for the most part as is. In that sense, I believe that it would be good to remake GameCube games for Wii, and that some titles would become better with the change to the Wii remote controller."
It was noted any such releases would be budget offerings, good news for the system as it will have a many-tiered software offering early in its lifecycle.
"[GameCube titles] are sold at used shops, so we don't feel we could sell them for full price. However, development costs have been taken care of, so we could probably sell them at a more accessible price. If we make it so that such GC to Wii remakes can be produced quickly, it's possible that many titles will also be released from third parties."
It does seem the Wii will see a greater volume of releases than perhaps any machine in history, though again the potential for lower quality game development, initially excused by a novel control schematic (as hinted at in
Peter Molyneux's GCDC keynote speech we told you about earlier), is a real possibility and something consumers should ensure they avoid in favour of demanding full-scale game content for the new Nintendo home machine.
We'll bring you more meat on this issue as it emerges in the looming months.
