No actually, we are not. Japanese developer Twilight Express has just released new screens of Happy Diet, the world’s first diet sim. The game is being designed as a lifestyle tool for the chubbier citizens of the Land of the Rising Sun and has been overseen by Professor Kazuhiko Kudou of the Kagawa Nutrition College.
The title will come bundled with a calorie burning jogging mat for the floor, giving the dieter three game modes to choose from. Dieting Story will follow the progress of a fictional dieter trying to loose weight, whilst fighting off all the temptations of food. Your Dieting Control, a diet organiser that tells the player what foods to eat and what exercise to do on a daily basis. The exercise comes in the form of jogging on the mat in Jogging mode. To make this more interesting and realistic, the PlayStation shows a first person view of jogging around a typical Japanese suburban neighbourhood.
As video games technology becomes further inegrated into mainstream lifestyles, we will no doubt see more of this kind of thing. We may laugh at it now but the future of this kind of application is immense. Educational software and edutainment titles already occupy a large section of the software market, but this is something new. As far as diversifying games console usage is concerned, it can only prove beneficial to us as games players.
