Incredible news breaking today sees RPG giants SquareSoft and Enix, of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest fame respectively, poised to announce a merger of their companies.

With preparation beginning as early as today in Japan, a new firm, imaginatively titled Enix Square will be launched on April 1 next year.

“In the ever-changing world of entertainment software, the most important issue facing companies today is how quickly they can grow as the marketplace and opportunities for business expand and diversify", commented an Enix spokesman. "Enix and Square's response to this issue is the merger announced today...Together, we will aim to become producer of the highest-quality digital content in the world."

The basic frame the merger will be built around is a simple share trade-off, with single Square shares being exchanged for 0.81 Enix. Yoichi Wada will continue to head up the new company, though the existing management structure in place at Square will be reorganised. Furthermore, Enix will take full ownership of all Square’s liabilities and assets.

"Starting around August, people inside the office started saying that there'd be huge buzz (sic) if we went together with Square," said Enix chairman Yasuhiro Fukushima. "So after I talked it over with Mr. Wada from Square, we realised we could make some incredible games together.”

So what can we expect from Enix Square? Final Dragon Fantasy Quest? Something like that anyway. Stay tuned for more as we get it.
