Longstanding mod-chip purveyor Lik-Sang has halted all operations following incisive legal action taken by Microsoft.
According to reports, Microsoft has taken the action to stop the Hong Kong-based firm distributing a selection of devices that circumvent the security protection contained within the Xbox.
Such devices enable Xbox users to play DVD video and games from outside their specific region, as well as run other software and pirated games.
It is thought that while the Xbox was offline, the only threat posed by mod-chips was possible loss of revenue from counterfeit games. As Xbox Live looms, Microsoft must tighten the security of its big black box, and enabling people to tinker around with its innards is now out of the question.
