A report from respected gaming website Magic Box gives an interesting picture of intended developer support for online console gaming.
A recent survey reveals that the PlayStation 2 and the Xbox are the most likely consoles to receive online games with almost equal developer support. When asked “Which console do you want to develop games for?” 36% said PS2 and 31% responded Xbox. Worryingly, only 9% of developers mentioned GameCube.
When asked if they were currently developing online games, 43% said they were examining the possibilities, 22.4% stated they were currently under development, 17% said ‘not under development’, 8.6% were scheduled to develop, and another 8.6% had no plans whatsoever.
Top Japanese developer Square has Final Fantasy XI in development, the first online incarnation of the popular RPG series, as well as one other unnamed project.
Enix are considering bringing their popular Dragon Quest into the online arena, and Sony are thinking about an online version of Everybody’s Golf.
The built in Broadband connectivity of the Xbox may give it an edge in the next stage of console online gaming, but Sony’s plan of including the Broadband adapter as part of the monthly subscription fee may prove irresistible to gamers.
