Remember DC Universe Online? It would seem that perhaps only a small handful of you do as Sony has announced that the game is due to adopt a free-to-play model. It would appear that those servers have become ghost towns of late and Sony Online Entertainment is giving it a final throw of the dice.

As of late October, DCUO will be available in three different flavours. Free play is pretty much as the game is now, though players will be limited to two characters and will have to purchase upgrades and DLC through microtransactions. Premium level is open to previous subscribers or anyone who buys a set amount of content and bumps up the amount of characters you're allowed and inventory slots.

The final level, Legendary, is a subscription based model where all DLC is included and players will get maximum upgrades in the game; more characters, more inventory and the ability to create huge leagues.

John Smedley, the President of SOE has said “We’ve listened to our community, and we’ve determined that the free-to-play model is the best fit for DC Universe Online.” This may smack a little of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted but actually it could be a very good move on SOE's part.

DCUO is a solid game that, when first launched, really captured the feel of superheroes and villains bounding around a city. When numbers tailed off, so did the appeal, but hopefully this decision to take the game in a freemium direction will inject some new life into it. It certainly deserves a second chance.
