iPlayer Updated for PS3 - No New Hope for Xbox 360

Beeb repeats Xbox Gold claims from 2009

iPlayer Updated for PS3 - No New Hope for Xbox 360
The BBC's iPlayer application for the PS3 is good. Free and good. Free, good but somewhat clunky. So, thank goodness it was updated earlier today. And thank equal amounts of goodness that it might come to Xbox 360.

First up, the PlayStationEU chaps tweeted:

"BBC has released a new application for BBC iPlayer on PS3 in the UK, including HD support. Just select iPlayer on the XMB to download it."

Next up, the BBC's general manager for programmes and on demand, David Danker, repeated the 2009 message that the Beeb would like to see Xbox 360 owners accessing iPlayer, telling TechRadar this time that:

"We want to be on as many devices as possible. Of course we'd love to be on the Xbox because we want to get the iPlayer to as many licence payers as possible, which is pretty much everyone in the UK.

"We want to be on the cheapest level that you can have on Xbox, and not only for [Xbox Live] Gold subscribers."

Sadly, this simply reiterates the 2009 message from the BBC that, "Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing. It wants to ensure that only those paying for Xbox Live Gold accounts can access its additional content services and even then there is usually a charge on top to get access to those...

"This does not fit with the BBC’s model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible."

That's great and all, But I'd rather just play games on a, you know...games console. I'm old fasioned that way I guess.

Plus F*** the licence fee. I don't even watch anything BBC related but I still have to pay for it?

technically you don't need a license fee to watch I player. its just that you need a TV to play games on. I think the Iplayer is a great addition. but i like a lot of BBC content.

I just think there should be a choice involved. I would welcome the removal of BBC channels on my TV if it means I didn't have to pay yet another tax for services I don't use.
£145.50...jeez.

@Cfan
There's lots that the license fee does that may not be obviously apparent! It does hold a lot of value. Even if today you have vitually no benefit from it, it doesn't mean that across your lifetime you wont find the license fee useful.

Think of it like the NHS. If you havn't got ill or hurt yourself, the NHS is totally useless to you. That doesn't mean that in the future you may find yourself very grateful for its exsistence!
