Japan Hardware: PSP Level, Wii Sees Present-Buying Boost
T’is the season to be jolly. At least it would be, if the Japanese largely celebrated Christmas. But in the country’s Hardware Chart it’s smiles all round (13th - 19th December 2010, courtesy Media Create) as every platform sees a sales boost over last week.

Home Console
Wii: 99,681 (79,424)
PS3: 49,515 (41,882)

360: 3,726 (3,695)

PS2: 2,188 (2,054)

Handheld
PSP: 162,558 (158,029)

DSi LL: 72,146 (59,709)

DSi: 71,804 (55,993)

DS Lite: 4,227 (3,309)

PSP Go: 1,949 (1,904)

(Previous week's unit sales in brackets for comparison)

The Wii in particular has seen the biggest lift, fuelled by the army of titles that scatter the software chart. As it’s present-buying season as well, Nintendo’s console is naturally going to see a fair few gains as consumers realise they still need to get one for their nan.

Sony’s PSP is still rocking the handheld chart and dominating sales on all platforms overall. We thought the initial take-up of Capcom’s Monster Hunter 3rd would result in a continuous dip in hardware sales, but we thought wrong. Numbers for the PSP-3000 and Go were up on last week.

Things are only going to heat up as it gets colder and the present-buying season kicks off proper in Japan. It’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top.
