Microsoft has revealed that the Xbox console will feature parental control as standard. This will enable parents to disable certain content in games they feel is unsuitable.
The system works via code that is embedded deep within the game system files on each disc. Scenes of an adult nature are tagged with a code that does not allow younger players to be exposed to anything unsuitable.
P J McNealy, senior analyst with Gartner G2 Consultancy said “Nintendo has traditionally been the family friendly console. They used to be the safe choice: no matter what kids bought for Nintendo, parents didn't have to worry. And this helps Microsoft set up to battle for that space.”
It is true that this will appeal to parents but is that the sector the games industry needs to impress? Do parents not ask their children what they want for Christmas rather than read up on each console’s pros and cons?
