THQ CEO's Strange Outburst: We Don't Need a $1,000 Console
The President and CEO of publisher THQ, Brian Farrell, has explained the industry does not need, "another $1,000 box that the hardware guys have to subsidize and that software developers have to spend even more money developing (for)."

Farrell explains that games on both of the leading machines in the market are looking stunning over-all, that "The market will decide if one or both of (Move and Kinect) will work, but I love the concept of both hardware guys trying to broaden the audience beyond just the core consumer."

That makes sense. He also pointed out, however, that, "If we were to have another $1000 box that the hardware guys have to subsidize and that software developers have to spend even more money developing, that model just doesn't work."

We imagine he's referring to the cost of development kit for consoles some time ago.

Quizzed on when consumers could expect a new console, Farrell wasn't forthcoming about a particular year and added that currently he doesn't see the value of consumers having to purchase new gaming hardware right now. He commented that, "When you talk about games or consoles, I always go back to what's in it for the gamer?

"What's the proposition for the person shelling out the $300-$400 for the system and the $60 for a game, what is value proposition for that gamer?"

Farrell concluded by saying that he sees games evolving to provide better emotional experiences like those found in movies, with better characters, deeper stories and similar production values.

We appreciate your comments Mr. Farrell but if you're making comparisons to reaching movie-like quality we can only hope you're not referring to Hollywood!

Maybe he's referring to that rumour of Apple buying out Sony's Entertainment division ;-)
