Developer Spike has recently shared several details of its upcoming detective-action based game for the PSP, Dangan-ronpa.
The game's full title reads Dangan-ronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei with the 'Dangan-ronpa' part of the title referring to "winning an argument with a bullet" to take an extract from Spike's press release of the title.
The game has 15 students arrive at the school's opening ceremony including the game's main character, Makoto Naegi. After fainting at the school entrance and waking up in what looks like a prison, he is greeted by something akin to a stuffed bear called 'Mono Bear' who claims to be the school's principal and tells Makoto and the other students "You will live here for the rest of your lives. If you want to graduate from the school, you will have to betray your friends. That is, you will have to kill someone." It is from here that a murder takes place and your task gets under way to find out who the killer is.
The game appears to be a fusion of detective-style interrogation a-la Phoenix Wright and Professor Layton together with action elements that will be integrated into the gameplay. As you interrogate and investigate, evidence that is found is kept as "Kotodama" (literally "Word Bullets"). The game will also include judgements sections where you can use the Kotodama to highlight inconsistencies in suspects' statements.
The game will utilise a visual style that Spike has branded "2.5D Motion Graphics" which will see players moving through the game's scenarios where the school will be fully 3D and the game's characters and objects are rendered in 2D and should make for an interesting and unique look.
The title does sound interesting and if you have enjoyed games Phoenix Wright,Proffersor Layton and Hotel Dusk then Dangan-ronpa sounds like it could be right up your street. Let us know if you want more murder-mystery intrigue on the PSP in the comments below.
