The third-party Matsushita GameCube may never reach the shelves in Europe. The extremely desirable console is apparently no longer in the pipeline and may not be released in Japan either. This brushed steel, DVD movie-playing version of Nintendo architecture was ‘just a model’.
Even though we all love Nintendo, the Japanese developer and publisher seems intent to puzzle us sometimes. Perhaps because of the risk of future piracy, Nintendo decided to choose proprietary mini-DVD as its software medium. Effectively, removing movie playback capability.
The Matsushita GameCube would have had cross-market appeal and increased Nintendo’s target audience. We’ll bring you any information of developments to this unfortunate situation.
