Apple to Drive Mobile Gaming - Nintendo, Sony Have Peaked
An analyst over at DFC Intelligence says that portable and mobile games "is expected to grow to $11.7 billion by 2014." Nice. However, the company also points out that "the primary driver of this growth is expected to be the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch." This is because by 2014 those formats will be scooping 24% of revenue in mobile gaming.

"What about the DS and PSP (and PSP Go)?" we hear you scream?

DFC analyst David Cole responds,"The dedicated portable game systems from companies like Nintendo and Sony are still expected to lead the market, but it appears growth for these devices has peaked. The platforms from Apple are expected to be responsible for the bulk of market growth over the next few years".

Yes, peaked.

I second that. DS2 will arrive just in time to upset Apple.

I call bs on that one, but I guess its their job to speculate.

Apple will dowell under the weight of some cool indie games and aps, but Nintendo will still win out with DS. Nintendo are good at advertising DS and Wii to those who wouldn't normally touch games, however you could never really say Apple do as good a job advertising games and aps. Also if Nintendo push DS2/GB2, that and Zune HD (an outsider, but could still upset things) are going to give iPhone some problems.

For this kind of gaming, crazy japanese influence is crucial. As for PSP Go, there's some better games heading that way, but they won't save it from last place.

The most common portable gaming platform today is probably... Java (even if it's popularity is debatable).

Prices needed to tumble more and specs needed to upgrade. Apple offers a better deal with the Itouch/Iphone (a lot cheaper than the PSP GO over here and not too much more than the DS) and now the performance, stylish and nicely done. Be good to see the new generation and if they are more open than previously.
