Rare: Shooters are Based on Original Xbox 360 Controller

You can make a shooter with Natal

Doom.
Doom.
According to design director George Andreas of Microsoft-owned Rare, "Shooters work the way they do at the moment because they’re based around the original Xbox 360 controller." It's a somewhat controversial take on how FPSs have evolved, however, if you're owned by Microsoft what else would you say?

Andreas was talking about developing a shooter for Natal. Now, this is something that's had us stumped for quite some time: grenade throwing, strafing, let alone sniping all look a tiny bit problematic using the new controller.

Can it be done? "Of course you can", says Andreas, "Will it be exactly the same as something you’re used to on a control pad? The answer to that is probably not, but does that mean it’s better or worse? Well we’ll see what we can do."

Judging by Perfect Dark Zero, the answer to that last sentence would be "not very well". Awful game.
