Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will hit American cinemas on Wednesday (July 11th) after a series of delays and setbacks. The film took four years to produce, which is not surprising considering that it represents a major landmark in motion picture history. It is the first movie where computer generated characters replace ‘flesh’ actors in traditional roles. Many people are predicting that it marks the beginning of the end for Hollywood stars, who will increasingly find themselves replaced by synthespians, who will work tirelessly, without stars’ salary demands or caprices. For now though, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within features the voices of Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi and Donald Sutherland for the major characters.

The film cost close to $140 million, twice the projected budget, and saw the company post its first ever losses this year. Square Pictures, a subsidiary of Squaresoft Japan, even set up exclusive offices in Honolulu, Hawaii, with blacked-out windows, to ensure the development of the film ran smoothly.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will see a UK premier on August 3rd, with a general release following on August 10th.
