Valve: Half-Life Episode One Gold. Details on Two, Three

Stealth release sees further PC gamer whitening.

Just when PC gamers were hoping to turn their skin from blue to transparent white, Valve ruins it all, announcing Half-Life 2: Episode One has gone gold and will be released on June 1st 2006, news that comes as something of a surprise.

The game will be released at retail stores across the US in a matter of days, with the next two instalments pledged before Christmas of 2007. Fear not however, for those of you living outside the Land Of Freedom, as Valve's Steam will host the game from the moment the shops open. Valve asked us to point out that Episode One does not require the original version of the game to run, meaning you won't have to dust off those old crack files after all.

"Given the rapid changes in PC gaming, we expect episodic games will have the same impact on single-player gaming that Counter-Strike had on multiplayer," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "The frequent releases of upgraded technology and new content works better for both consumers and developers, and is one of the key reasons Counter-Strike grew to be 80% of the online action market. We decided that a follow-up to Half-Life 2 delivered in 18 months with our first episode was more in tune with what our customers want than waiting six years for another monolithic product."

In addition to the two touted multiplayer modes and the Lost Coast demo, Ep1 will show off Episode Two, which promises to be another update in the ever-swelling epic to the tune of six hours of gameplay.
