Driver for the Gameboy Color is portable undercover fun. Assuming the role of Tanner, an ex-cop, you must infiltrate the Mafia and gain their trust by becoming one amazing getaway driver. Serving the mob well is your only chance of survival. The action takes place over three cities in three different states so you can expect plenty of variation. If you take too much damage to your car, it’s game over.

Driver has several different game modes to keep you entertained. Once you have completed the first undercover mission in Los Angeles, you can choose the levels in the driving game section. This selection of games is a great feature of Driver. You can take place in a cross-town race, or play getaway, where you have to lose the police on your tail. Pursuit involves chasing another car until you can ram him off the road or try the Survival game, where it’s you being chased.

The control method is easy to learn and very responsive. The Gameboy manages to convey a nice feeling of speed and It’s scary going flat out through a city with a car that’s ready to blow. Having good reflexes will be an advantage. Driver has good graphics and sound but it’s the gameplay that stands out. Overall, a quality title.
