Middlesboro fans hold onto Sports Interactive Cup.

Continuing on from the success of the 2000 tournament, the Sports Interactive Cup took place last weekend (July 14th – 15th) in Leeds, and proved to be even more popular than last year’s event.

The development team behind the best-selling series of Championship Manager games, Islington-based Sports Interactive, was so impressed by last year’s event, which attracted over 1,000 players from across the UK and Europe, that they had no hesitation in sponsoring the tournament cup once again.

The Sports Interactive Cup saw 51 teams of supporters battling it out for the prestigious trophy, with the Middlesboro fans claiming victory in a thrilling final against Dunbarton with a 2 - 0 score line. Other entrants included: Leeds United, Celtic, AEK Athens, RC Lens, Arsenal, Dunfermline and Swindon.

The tournament was for football fans that met on the Internet via e-mail discussion groups, and was organized by John Boocock of the Internet Football Association. The association has enjoyed watching how the event has grown over the six years since it began.

“We started this event way back in 1996 when we wanted to show that fans could come together in the spirit of the beautiful game. This is all about enjoying the sport on and off the pitch.” commented John Boocock. "We now have regular matches between fans on match days, the sport has spread to Scotland and we are now attracting fans from across Europe - 44 fans were here from Northern France, supporting and playing for RC Lens.”

Miles Jacobson, Managing Director of Sports Interactive added, “The Sports Interactive team competed in the tournament and we had a whale of a time. We were delighted to see Middlesboro secure a well-deserved win for the second year running.

“Probably most importantly, though, was that there was a great spirit of friendly competitiveness between the rival teams’ fans that we can only hope will be taken into the stands for the forthcoming season.”
