Summary

The first F.E.A.R. game, released back in 2005, delivered oodles of horror and action in equal proportion, with tight, close-quartered action and a dark, suspenseful atmosphere. So what do you do for a sequel? More horror, more action!

F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin places gamers behind the gun of Michael Becket, a member of a special forces unit caught in the midst of some pretty strange and catastrophic goings-on. There are hordes of clone soldiers, supernatural nasties and - at the centre of it all - there's Alma, the creepy girl from the first game with some pretty potent paranormal powers.

So, the ante has been upped in terms of the chaos produced by the uber-powerful (and more than a little frightening) Alma, so what have the good guys got to deal with it? Mech suits, for one. The pitch of the action has been taken up a notch with the addition of mechanised combat, something long-time fans of developer Monolith might be familiar with thanks to 1998's Shogo: Mobile Armor Division.

The action has also been made that bit more frantic with more open-air combat than the first game, lending the sequel a more frenetic pace.

The slow-motion feature of the first game makes a reappearance, but you'll have to think faster, too, since the enemy AI has been improved to make it more tactical.

As with any good shooter, multi-player action is present and accounted for, with players able to do battle with or against their mates.

If you're looking for a fast-paced, action-focused horror title, this is your spooky little girl. << less
