Eidos Announces Reservoir Dogs Videogame

Tarantino’s classic heist-gone-tits caper.

Eidos has just announced that it is to publish the videogame version of Quentin Tarantino’s classic heist-gone-wrong tale, Reservoir Dogs. The game will be released on PC, Xbox and PS2 this autumn and here, for your viewing pleasure, are the first screens.

Reservoir Dogs was perhaps the definitive movie of the early 1990s. It’s hard to even think that way back in 1992 there was a nerdy unknown director who went from working in a video rental store to being a Hollywood A-lister almost overnight. That man being, of course, the fast-talking movie uber-geek Quentin Tarantino.

The film in case you have forgotten, or if you (shamefully) haven’t seen it, is about five total strangers, teaming up to commit the perfect crime – but the heist goes badly wrong. Something got seriously f---ed up. One of the men is the rat, an infiltrator working for the cops. But which one? The movie’s tagline summed it up: 'Five Total Strangers Team Up For The Perfect Crime. They Don't Know Each Other's Name. But They've Got Each Other's Number'

The game is a third-person shooter and, SPOnG is informed by the press release, stays true to the original plot and chronology. The press release also promises that the game will fill in some of the blanks left from the film: “What happened to Mr. Blue and Mr. Brown? Where did Mr. Pink hide the diamonds? What actually happened at the heist? These questions and more will be answered as the game unfolds.” We have to admit, it sounds pretty intriguing. If nothing else, it has made us want to watch the movie again.

The game will also feature the full, amazing soundtrack from the movie – hopefully including Steven Wright’s stint as K-Billy the DJ, presenting the Super Sounds of the Seventies, including the student disco classics ‘Little Green Bag’ and ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’.

The one query SPOnG has is that 99% of the movie was famously set in one small, confined warehouse space, which added an amazing sense of tension to Tarantino’s cleverly disjointed narrative. But, as a third-person shooter/action game environment, it might get a little bit tiresome after a while!

Clearly Eidos is hoping that the cult value of the film license will translate into massive game sales. SPOnG loves the movie, and really hopes that the Eidos in-house development team does it justice, as it would be worse than awful to see Reservoir Dogs given the Bad Boys movie-to-game treatment. Somebody, and we are not saying who, would have to pay for the mix up. Maybe even have their ear cut off!

Helen Lawson, Eidos’ Brand Manager on the title had the following to say: “We are proud to be working with one of the most original films to be released in our lifetime on a gaming format… Reservoir Dogs will appeal to both movie and gaming fans, and offers an unprecedented opportunity to play through the events of the movie and fill in the gaps.”

We want to make it clear that SPOnG abhors real-life violence, and in no way condones any of our readers actions, including but not limited to cutting off the ears of any videogame developers or publishers who have been responsible for making average third-person shooter games based on their favourite movies.

saw a trailer for this on the DL at GDC, perhaps it was just the "little green bag" playing in the background that did it for me, but it looked pretty cool.

interested to see how this pans out.

Well hopefully it'll be done kinda like the warriors and expand the story without forcing it - I'm not sure how well it would stand up to scrutiny, part of the reason Res Dogs was such a great film was because you had to fill in the gaps yourselves and later scenes cast revelation on previously shown ones. I have to say that making an action game out of a film with hardly any in it is a bold move. Heck maybe it'll even have an earslicing minigame.
