PSP Adds Podcasts and More
Sony Computer Entertainment released a new firmware upgrade for its PSP, this time focusing on consumer content rather than enhanced security. Available here, Firmware Version 2.6 is perhaps Sony’s first proper shot at Apple’s iPod portable music monopoly, and is awash with features aimed at relegating your little white/pink/sky blue/black box to the dresser drawer.

The first and most important is the addition of Podcasting to the PSP’s repertoire. PSP users will now be able to stream digital audio directly from wireless Internet access points via the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) functionality added to the Global menu in the PSP user interface. Of course, this a blow to Apple, as Podcasts currently need to be downloaded to iTunes, then transferred to iPod for on the move enjoyment.

Sony engineers also added enhanced movie viewing – bottoming one of the trickiest elements of PSP multimedia usage. Copyright protected movie files can now be downloaded for use directly to Memory Stick through the PSP’s impressive browser.

Sony also stated that as well as upping the volume output of the PSP - solving another commonly-voiced issue - Chinese language sets have also been included.

Louder! That's EXACTLY what I need for movie viewing at the gym. They insist on plpaying baning (motivational) electronic shte at top volume through the PA.
