Jak III Bounds Forth

The trilogy closes with admirable panache.

Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter was one of the first high quality platformers to arrive on the PS2. Jak II went on to represent the very best of the genre. That’s why great things are hoped for from Jak III, which will be the final part of the trilogy proper (there may well be spin-off games in the future). It is already shaping up to look rather spectacular, and might just manage to live up to these lofty expectations. It will involve the usual well-balanced platforming and driving action, and extends the free-roaming nature of Jak II even further in the right direction.

Assuming that Naughty Dog delivers what should be a truly excellent game, the Jak trilogy, along with the Ratchet & Clank trilogy, will become the perfect example of how to approach sequel production. Take a good game, delve deeper into the storyline, improve the graphics, vary the challenges and add greater depth to the gameplay possibilities, all without losing track of the title’s original identity. It’s textbook stuff.

Providing there’s no slippage, Jak III is likely to be at the top of many PS2 Christmas lists this winter.
