First details of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater were first uttered from the lips of Hideo Kojima this time last year. The earliest screenshots pictured Snake biting a chunk out of a snake, but many people were inclined to think this was a bit of a red herring. Now we know that it was an indication of the gameplay that MGS3 would deliver. Yup, it’s a new genre – the nourish ‘em up. In Snake’s latest tale of heroic hiding, he will have to prove himself as a master hunter-gatherer.
There’s an extensive menu of bush-tucker to chomp upon, with the most delicious ingredients consisting of bees, frogs and jungle fungi (alas no MSG to enhance the flavours). Each foodstuff will affect Snake’s health differently, and to a greater or lesser extent depending on whether it’s a fresh find. Regardless of dietary value, it’s an amusingly novel concept which is crucial to the player’s success.
Elsewhere in Kojima’s world, Konami are launching their ‘camouflage campaign’ via http://www.konamijpn.com, which invites MGS aficionados to create their own unique brands of camo, the most aesthetically pleasing of which will be included in the finished game. A Metal Gear comic is also on the way, launching Stateside this September.
