Portable PlayStation for £200

Deering makes new PSP claims.

Speaking to industry magazine MCV, Sony Europe boss Chris Deering made some fresh claims about the Portable PlayStation - or PSP - this time focusing in on pricing.

“The feeling is that this product should generate profit on hardware alone,” said Deering, highlighting the fact that SCE, not for the first time, is taking a leaf from Nintendo’s book. “We want to make it affordable for publishers to produce a wide range of entertainment, and so royalties will be lower down in the mix this time round,” he continued. A bold statement, indeed.

This revelation, if it comes to fruition, will serve to ease the escalating fears of developers and publishers that were expecting margins to be as tight as those endured in the bringing to market of games for Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance.

More interesting still, Deering made the shock announcement of Sony’s thoughts on possible pricing for the hotly anticipated system, saying that he expects the machine will cost “…closer to £200 than £300,” giving the world its first glimpse of where the PSP will fit in today’s market.
