New Street Fighter II confirmed
As we reported several months ago - and to an alarmingly sceptical audience it must be said - Capcom Japan is indeed working on an all-new Street Fighter II game in order to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the series.

Carrying the intriguing title Hyper Street Fighter II X, the game looks set to be a purist remake of the original, with new stuff thrown in for good measure.

As you may recall, the original Hyper Fighter version of SFII was initially intended to fight off the slew of bootleg JAMMA boards and “upgrade” kits that flooded from the black market at the beginning of the 90’s. The most popular were Black Belt Edition and Rainbow edition, both of which featured faster, sometimes variable game speed, and relaxed game engines.

The game was the first to really hammer home the difference between Ken and his Dragon Punch supremacy, and Ryu, with greater standard move damage and up-rated fireballs. Both got mid-air hurricane kicks. Chun-Li got fireballs and all characters were given a fluidity of movement that is seen by some to be the most important aspect of the evolution of 2D fighters to date.

History lesson over, Capcom promises to unveil the game at this month’s Tokyo Game Show. We’ll bring you every snippet of information direct from Japan, as it breaks.
