Nokia is intent on entering the gaming market, and as such, is likely to make a few mistakes along the way. One might be to call any adopters of Nintendo’s massive-selling Game Boy Advance a “ten-year old.”
Indeed, speaking to the Dow Jones, the impressively Scandinavian Ilkka Raiskinen said, “Game Boy is for 10-year-olds. If you're 20 or 25 years old, it's probably not a good idea to draw a Game Boy out of your pocket on a Friday night in a public place.”
As reported earlier, Nintendo already believes that by the time the N-Gage launches, “Nokia will have nothing,” while Nintendo enjoys a massive market lead. We’ll see, though in fairness, Raiskinen’s comments do seem a little wide of the mark, and it’s arguably naive to run the risk of alienating a projected 60 million gamers.
On another matter, Nokia played a bout of Russian roulette with the world’s games press at this year’s E3 conference. In order to ensure attendance from the freebie-loving journalists of the world, Nokia sent out an invitation that read, “we suggest you get there early to guarantee the best seat and your not-to-be-missed swag,” sparking speculation that something monumental in the world of games industry goodies was afoot.
Talk before the event was of a free N-Gage or other fantastic cellular gift from the biggest mobile phone company in the business. And what was the “not-to-be-missed swag?”
A cheap bag, with nothing in it.
How we laughed…
