Nokia has announced that the N-Gage is to be released worldwide on 7th October at just under US$300 (£185). The N-Gage is being marketed as the ultimate gadget, and for good reason. It has all the features of a typical top-range mobile phone, with the added bonus of both an FM radio and an MP3 player. 'Why are you telling us about a phone?' we hear you call. Well, it plays games too.
With some of the biggest names already confirmed in gamecard form - Tomb Raider, Red Faction, Tony Hawks, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon and Rayman - there should be a fair few decent titles bidding for your attention. And thanks to the fact these games are played on a mobile phone, portable online gaming will be immediately available.
However, there's still much speculation in the gaming press as to how the N-Gage will be received by the public. It's a fair wedge to shell out for a portable console, especially when Nintendo are constantly improving the functionality of the GBA and Sony's PSP is on the horizon. But as the ultimate gizmo, the N-Gage could still carve its own niche in the hearts of the gaming community.
