The Xbox One(s) You Could Have Had

Early designs revealed

The image you see to the right shows some of the designs that could have held the guts of the Xbox One.

The designs were shown off by Xbox creative director Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference 2013. As you might expect, there were a lot of designs tried out. Some 30 people started out with sketches (again, take a look in the gallery) which were sent to a Microsoft model shop to be built into prototypes, then tested in real world environments such as living rooms. Engineers were then consulted to see how the components might actually fit into the casings.

Ledbetter said that Microsoft was aiming for "understated" and "approachable."

"The design you see here", Ledbetter said, indicating the final Xbox One design, "this is where we start to apply things like gloss and matte finishes. How does the vent pattern look? How does the brand come through the front? How do we make the font look high quality, just like the high definition televisions in people's living rooms?"

He also said that Microsoft tried over 200 prototypes for the new controller, saying that people could notice differences of just a 10th of a millimeter in size.

Mark Cerny, the lead architect on the PS4, revealed at Develop that Sony created a giant controller to see how it would feel in a child's hands. Maybe some of the tiny-looking Xbox One prototypes were developed to see how it would look in a giant's living room.

Designing for the living room first and components second is what made the 360 overheat and "red ring".

I don't hold out much hope for the One.
