Valve Launches Dota 2 to Public
We've waited some two years for it. But finally, Valve has opened the (virtual) public doors to its free-to-play strategy game Dota 2. New players will be added to the game in waves in order to maximise game performance.

The game, a spiritual sequel to the Defence of the Ancients mod for Blizzard's Warcraft 3, has been in closed beta for around two years, which has resulted in "the largest active community in Steam's history," according to Valve, "with a monthly user base of more than 3 million users, and peak concurrent users of over 300,000."

The size of the game's community has forced Valve to consider launching the game in waves. It explains that this will "ensure that existing Dota 2 users will keep playing without disruption, and new users will be able to join the community seamlessly."
