So the Wii U hasn't exactly set the world on fire. But Nintendo star designer Shigeru Miyamoto believes that the console will eventually win consumers over, comparing the platform's situation with the Nintendo DS' own post-launch apathy back in 2005.

"There was a period when we first released the Nintendo DS that people would say there's no way people can look at two screens at once," Miyamoto told CNN. You'll remember that the DS was also positioned towards the core gamer, before being re-imagined with the DS Lite in 2006 and becoming a massive hit, selling some 150 million units worldwide.

"I almost feel like, as people get more familiar with Wii U and these touchscreen interfaces, that there is going to come a point where they feel 'I can't do everything I want to do if I don't have a second screen'," Miyamoto added, noting that it Nintendo's current challenge is to try and communicate the benefits of the GamePad better.

"The other thing I think about is how do we begin getting people to understand that [the MiiVerse] and convey the usefulness of Wii U to them."

Wii U sales saw a significant boost in the UK over the last week as retailers slashed prices of the console alongside launches of two key titles for the platform - Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and LEGO City Undercover. It's still struggling to compete with the PS3 and Xbox 360 however, something that Nintendo hopes to rectify come Autumn.
