Valve is Developing its Own Steam Box
Valve's plan for living room domination continues at the Consumer Electronics Show today, as the company announced that Xi3 Corporation's Piston isn't the only 'Steam Box' in development. In fact, it intends to release its own hardware to complement its Steam Big Picture functionality.

Company co-founder Gabe Newell revealed that Valve is working on its own Steam Box - which is codenamed Bigfoot - and that the company would happily work with more third parties on their hardware projects in the future.

"We'll come out with our own and we'll sell it to consumers by ourselves," Newell told The Verge. The PC-console will come with Linux pre-installed, but users will have the option to install Windows if that's their bag. "We're not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination."

Most importantly, Newell said that there will be no real rules imposed on third parties that want to make their own Steam Box. Internally, however, the goals that Valve is aiming with Bigfoot is "a thing that's quiet and focuses on high performance" as well as "appropriate form factors". He added that the Steam Box will also function as a multimedia device as well as a games unit.
