Microsoft reaches target installed user-base of 1.5 million
At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, exactly one year on from initial unveiling of the Xbox final casing, Microsoft has proudly announced that it has managed to shift 1.5 million Xbox consoles, achieving its target user-base for the period.

Microsoft also made reference to an NPD report that states Xbox consumers have bought, on average, more than three games for their systems.

"It feels great to kick off the global rollout of Xbox with a record-breaking launch in North America," said Robbie Bach, Senior Vice President and Chief Xbox Officer at Microsoft. "In 2002, we're excited to bring Xbox to the world with our upcoming launches in Japan, Europe and Australia. We'll also be offering more great games and exciting online experiences like never before."

Several new Xbox-clusive titles were also unveiled. The publishers of NBA Inside Drive 2002, Wreckless: The Yakuza Missions, WWF Raw, RalliSport Challenge and Jet Set Radio Future all confirmed that these games would appear only on the Xbox platform.

Addressing the console’s belated online launch, Microsoft made some commitments that should see Xbox online gaming realised properly in the next few months. One of the most impressive claims to come from the company is that it has more people working on Xbox online functionality than were employed to develop and engineer the machine in the first place. "Online console gaming will play a significant role in the future of video games. Gamers will be able to compete against one another online, play games that evolve over the course of months, and download new levels, weapons and characters," Bach said. "Xbox is clearly positioned to lead the way in the online gaming revolution."
