E3 2012: Microsoft Reveals Tablet and Smartphone System for Xbox 360

Microsoft Unveils Xbox Smartglass

Posted by
Microsoft has announced a means for tablet devices and smartphones to interact directly with Xbox 360, called Xbox Smartglass. It will work with movies, TV shows and video games - and it works with Windows Phone, Windows tablets, and even Apple's iPhone and iPad.

Movies can be started on a tablet, and resumed on Xbox 360 in a similar way to Netflix and Apple's own AirPlay technology. When watching on your big screen, your phone or tablet can be used as an extension, displaying information about the film or TV show as it plays out.

For games, two examples of Smartglass were showcased. In Madden NFL, a tablet could be connected to an Xbox 360 to make plays in a playbook using the touch-screen device, while in Halo 4 players could answer friend requests for matchmaking and customise their Spartan while they play the main game.
