Basically, the press release reads thus: "BioWare, a Label of Electronic Arts Inc. announced Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a downloadable content pack that will expand upon the events at the end of the critically acclaimed Action RPG." It's being read to mean that fan criticism has lead to EA and Bioware rushing out DLC for a crowd-pleasing ending. But what of the detail? The release says, "Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the
Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut (DLC) will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of
Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes."
So, additional content. And the DLC itself is free. All good there then. Following some "we are excited to present" flannel from Dr. Ray Muzyka, Co-Founder of BioWare and General Manager of BioWare, however, we're also told that, "Since launch, we have had time to listen to the feedback from our most passionate fans and we are responding. With the
Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe."
So, the difference between "art" and "product"? You don't change the ending of
Citizen Kane... but you can release a director's cut.
