Ah, analysts. We do love our analysts, don't we? This week's fluff-talking soothsayer is Colin Sebastian of the Baird Equity Research group, who predicts that EA's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO will sell around three million units by the end of the publisher's fiscal year in March. To be fair, there may be grounds for that claim, with EA confirming that BioWare's online multiplayer amassed a record-breaking userbase of over a million players at launch. Sebastian reckons that the MMO genre still has some clout.
"We view the early success of Star Wars as an indication of a healthy MMO market. While there is likely some shifting of usage from Activision's World of Warcraft, we see a viable market for multiple million-user MMOs in the U.S. and Europe."
According to the analyst, about 350,000 concurrent users were online at the game's peak last month. While the game could shift a lot of boxes at retail, he's less optimistic about the number of paid monthly users by that time, stating that 1.5-2 million users were a touch too high in that regard.
