More popular than iPhone and iPad, apparently.

Think of a company name that resonates with young people. Apple? Google? According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the Xbox is the biggest consumer brand.

At CES yesterday, the executive told CNBC that the console - which Microsoft has been fashioning into a multi-purpose set-top box with TV, film and music downloads - resonates the best with the young tech-savvy demographic.

“The most popular young consumer brand in the electronics business is ours, the Xbox,” Ballmer said. “You could say, OK, we and Apple can go at it. But let’s make no mistake about it, for young people today it’s the exciting things they’re doing, or the things they’re doing in the—what we call the entertainment side of their lives.”

Microsoft announced at CES that TV streaming service Hulu Plus would be coming to the Xbox 360, along with support for its motion-sensing camera Kinect.

In America maybe, but in Europe Playstation is still a bigger brand.

@DrkStr - And in Japan, it doesn't exist as a brand!

lol - in breaking news "Company says its own products are the best". I'm not sure about tech-savvy - in my experience, PS3 owners tend to be a bit sharper with tech (not surprisingly, as the PS3 is a more effective media hub and has a wider range of functionality, and so tech-savvy folk are likely to favour it over the 360). He's got one thing right though - the average age and maturity of 360 players is deffo on the younger side ;). There are, of course, lots of young idiots and mature tech-savvy people on both platforms, I'm just talking about the broader distribution of these populations.

I too find that a bit humorous (the bit about the PS3 owners being more tech-savvy)...if anything the reverse is true. Everyone I know who is "tech-savvy" who owned a PS3 sold theirs, a loooooong time ago, back when GT5 was only a few years late. In addition, in the last console generation, the Xbox was clearly the more technologically interesting, and I don't think a lot of people looked back...aside from a few titles there hasn't really been any compelling reason to. And the most technologically interesting thing about the PS3 (ability to run Linux) was scrapped. Finally the "fat" PS3 was utterly and completely unsuited to either co-existing with other A/V and computer equipment or being carted around in a pack...also the thing is UGLY.

So I pretty much fail to see any special appeal the PS3 would have to those technologically inclined, PlayStations' primary selling point, the real reason most people walk out the store with one boils down to "brand inertia". Its the Kleenex of gaming consoles, I wouldn't be surprised if some future historian uses the term as a catchall for gaming consoles in general.
