Cock-up or conspiracy? An apparently invalid security certificate on the Microsoft Billing site for is sending users of the Firefox browser away with a warning.

Spotted by a reader at The Register - and replicated by us - users trying to login to the site are met with a warning that they are making an Untrusted Connection.

The technical detail is, "billing.microsoft.com uses an invalid security certificate.

"The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.

"(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)"

Accessing the same site with Google's Chrome or Microsoft's own Internet Explorer sees no such message displayed and the user heads straight into billing.

The Reg spoke to Chris Boyd, a security consultant at Sunbelt and Microsoft MVP who told them, "It seems you get a cert error in Firefox 3.6.8 (the latest version), I don't have other versions to hand to try out," Boyd told El Reg. "[It] Works in IE, and the cert is viewable."

The problem appears to be similar to one that affected Firefox 3 in August 2008.

So, Firefox users wanting to update their Xbox Live details, you'd better switch to another browser until either Microsoft or Firefox get their act sorted out.
