Gabe Newell - Pioneer.
Gabe Newell - Pioneer.
Gabe Newell, managing director of game development at Valve, has already managed to scoop an award for 2010 and we're not even out of January.

The 2010 Game Developers Choice Awards, which - according to their own PR - are "the highest honours in video game development, announced the winner of the first 'Special Awards' in the tenth annual ceremony, taking place at GDC 2010 this March: "Gabe Newell as the winner of this year's Pioneer Award."

The judging panel (' the Choice Awards Advisory Committee') who made the award includes: Ben Cousins (EA DICE), Harvey Smith (Arkane), Raph Koster (Metaplace), John Vechey (PopCap), Ray Muzyka (BioWare) and Clint Hocking (Ubisoft).

Gabe gets the award for "his work in co-creating the PC key digital download service Steam, and helping to make possible some of the most important video games of the past two decades -- from the Half-Life series through Portal to Team Fortress and beyond."

Congrats to Gabe. More puffery about the awards here.
