Team Fortress 2 Gets AI-Controlled Bots
Team Fortress 2 is going to get even more populated soon, with Valve introducing AI-driven multiplayer 'bots' to the online shooter yesterday.

Known as TFBots, these computer-controlled characters are an extension of the AI implemented in Left 4 Dead, according to the studio on its Team Fortress 2 Blog. Uniquely, TFBots aim to closely represent real, thinking human players to help make up numbers on small teams. The feature is currently in a Beta phase.

“TFBots are 'players', and take up player slots. They run the exact same code that human players do, moving and firing weapons by pressing 'virtual buttons'", explains Valve's Mike Booth. “The bots have simulated human-like senses, and only know what they see, hear, and touch. They also have realistic reaction times and aiming limitations. They don't "cheat" or use omniscient knowledge of the server state to make their decisions.”

The TFBots aren't yet complete, so users taking advantage of the new feature are encouraged to submit feedback to Valve in regards to any bugs, annoyances or other discoveries. The 'bots' are only available on the “koth_viaduct”, “koth_sawmill” and “koth_nucleus” levels, and players must access them manually using the console command to drop them in.
