Newish PlayStation Portable in 2009

Sliding doors for December

A mock-up. Remember? Not the real thing.
A mock-up. Remember? Not the real thing.
Back before Christmas there was a rumour that there was going to be a "refresh the PlayStation Portable product line with a PSP-4000 model in late 2009 and launch a true successor - a PSP2."

Well, it's after Christmas now, and the rumour won't lie down and die. It has been reignited by a "highly trusted source" from somewhere (maybe Sony, maybe a publishers, maybe the chap who designed the image you see to the right - which is a mock-up) who has told VG247 that, "The revamp does have a sliding front-screen, and we’re assured the design being currently touted isn’t a million miles away from this now-infamous image."

The refresh will be announced at E3 or GDC... or somewhere, this year.

If it looks like that I would love to buy one, the new DSi is very expensive imo.

The long awaited version with a keyboard, a bit like certain phones?

Smoke and mirror consideration time. People close to the action say there is a PSP 2, people at Sony say there is not. Maybe it is an upgrade of the old hardware and Sony does not regard that as a PSP 2 (which might be a new platform). We might be lucky and get higher speed processor and other circuits with more memory, but maybe not 3D display. However, a phone feature might also a possibility. A new 3D processor and other circuits is unlikely, though an upgrade to the 3D chip with new 3D features might be possible

The present PSP is aged, it's 3D processor maybe outclassed by one chip I reported on in 2007, and clock speeds economical but probably in need of enhancement to 1 Ghz for the next 3 years. However play control options is where significant improvement can be made. I am not saying that the DS control system is not that good, but that the processing performance is less than I like in a package that is quirky to me that I do not like at a price I do not like (even without the quirkiness I do not like). Imagine a PSP that could rival a DS or Wii, that would be interesting. One step further the PSP could be made compatible with the PS2 games, and sold as a replacement that could be used as a portable or placed next to the TV set and used as a console with wireless controller and wireless HDMI feed. There is latitude there to do that, or even use it as a portable DVD player if big enough, with a cheap pocket version as well.

The real shame is that Nintendo is not putting forward their next portable and concentrating on the DS (boo, hiss) which I have been waiting for since before the launch of the GBC (admittedly that might have been a previouse platform that the DS might be related to) then after the Launch of the GBA another mention of the next machine, using disks I believe, and in recent years that it was based on the Game cube, what I definitely was not waiting for was the DS (the PSP is more like what I was waiting for). Neither Nintendo machine seems to play at the level of game I want at their highest resolution. IGhz 576p Linux Game cube portable please.
