Inside News On Escape From Alcatraz

Legendary but defunct prison re-opens, but only on PC.

One of the biggest PC titles due for preview at this year's E3 is Escape From Alcatraz from German publisher CDV Software, whose recent successes include Sudden Strike and Cossacks.

In Escape From Alcatraz, the player's aim is to free their people from several highly diverse prisons, not just the titular jail. Succeed at this and your character will be ready to attempt the final mission: to spring the "Big Boss" from Alcatraz Prison.

The real Alcatraz, built on an island in San Francisco Bay, closed in 1963, and earned a reputation as the most secure prison of all time. 125 guards oversaw up to 30 of the USA's most dangerous criminals, including Al Capone, "Machinegun" Kelly and Robert Stroud, better known as the Birdman of Alcatraz.

The difference is that with Escape From Alcatraz, you don't play the role of the prisoner, you are the liberator, initially working from the outside. The game displays a clever blend of action and adventure gaming techniques, with varied locations, a series of different tasks for the player, an advanced graphic engine and realistic sound effects.

Escape From Alcatraz is scheduled for UK release in November 2001.
