Electronic Arts in Naive Fox News Note

Mass Effect marketing department to take holiday?

Electronic Arts in Naive Fox News Note
If there is one thing we would never had called Electronic Arts Vice President of Communications, Jeff Brown, it's naive. However, the last paragraph of his letter to Fox News producer, Teri VanHorn, regarding the 'news' channel's recent defamation of Bioware's Mass Effect, could prove us wrong.

"This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect."

Yes, you read that right - an appeal to Fox News' "sense of fairness". Stop laughing at the back!

Before continuing, you might wish to refer to the video of the Fox News debacle at the bottom of this story: In it you'll get to see:

Bam! Former traffic reporter and "regular fill-in" turned developmental psychologist, Cooper Lawrence slamming a game that she'd never played.

Crack! Cooper Lawrence - who 'began her career on a dare' being called on this omission live on air.

Zonk! Some spoddy looking idiot comparing Mass Effect to Luke Skywalker meets Debbie Does Dallas.

Okay, Jeff is obviously not naive, after all, the letter has made its way into the wide world; Electronic Arts does own Bioware and has done since January 7th this year; and the kind of press that EA's newly acquired development studio is getting cannot usually be bought, even with press trips to exotic places.

Jeff would really not have been doing his job had he not made the most of this golden opportunity. That said, we're still going to tip the SPOnG Underwater Castle bowler to Brown for the tone, content and target of his letter. Although we can't help but feel that suing Fox News for defamation would have seen us presenting him with slices of our own hearts in gratitude.

The EA Letter

Ms VanHorn,

I'm writing to request a clarification of serious errors FNC made in a story which aired about the video game Mass Effect. (See attachment) As the parent company of BioWare, the studio which created the game, EA would like you to set the record straight on a number of errors and misstatements which incorrectly characterize the story and character interactions in Mass Effect.

Errors include the following:

* Your headline above the televised story read: "New videogame shows full digital nudity and sex."
o Fact: Mass Effect does not include explicit or frontal nudity. Love scenes in non-interactive sequences include side and profile shots - a vantage frequently used in many prime-time television shows. It's also worth noting that the game requires players to develop complex relationships before characters can become intimate and players can chose to avoid the love scenes altogether.
* FNC voice-over reporter says: "You'll see full digital nudity and the ability for players to engage in graphic sex."
o Fact: Sex scenes in Mass Effect are not graphic. These scenes are very similar to sex sequences frequently seen on network television in prime time.
* FNC reporter says: "Critics say Mass Effect is being marketed to kids and teenagers."
o Fact: That is flat out false. Mass Effect and all related marketing has been reviewed by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) and rated Mature - appropriate for players 17-years and older. ESRB routinely counsels retailers on requesting proof of age in selling M-rated titles and the system has been lauded by members of Congress and the Federal Trade Commission. In practical terms, the ratings work as well or better than those used for warning viewers about television content.
* Other sources used in the segment made similar incorrect statements about the game. Judging by the inaccuracy of their comments, they have had zero experience with Mass Effect and are largely ignorant about videogames, the people who play them, and the ESRB system that governs their ratings and sales.

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

This isn't a legal threat; it's an appeal to your sense of fairness. We're asking FNC to correct the record on Mass Effect.

Sincerely,

Jeff Brown
Vice President of Communications Electronic Arts, Inc.

Eh? EA owns Bioware... getting Bioware publicity is publicity for EA.

Had Cooper Lawrence not been called on it, I doubt EA would have 'stepped up' though.

Crap, they'll all have to resign and then write long, self-congratulatory blog posts about it.

Cheers

All these idiots are having a rant based on the presupposition that original report of "full digiital nutidy and sex" is even true.

The guy Jeff comes in and rejects this, gets sniggered at for daring to imply that to have an opinion on the game you must play it ("Cooper have you ever played the game?" <Cooper sniggers> "no"),

His assertion that there is no nudity is ignored.

Then to cap it all off Cooper ignores and disregards Jeff 's expert knowledge (ie. played the damn thing) and patronizes him with "darling I've got to go with the research"

FTR, Cooper Lawrence=clueless f**k who bases her opinions on word of mouth and the "bluffers guide" to real research

"look at the statistics. who's playing games? it's adolescent males and not their dads"

more like "AND their dads"

then they go and get games confused with a ewb site.

Funny isnt it, A game has an indication that a sexual experince may happen, and its treated like some porn movie!,

When Fox produces the Simpsons, “Prime Time Family Fun”, and i cant remember the amount of times ive seen a crotch with almost definition thrusting, homer alone does it almost weekly, juggling clowns with crotches thrust in homers face, Neds Ski Outfit “feels like im wearing nothing at all, nothing at all”
Marge and Homer are having sex in public places, Homer wants to have sex with Marge while Bart is tethered to him, and the movie actual goes and shows a childs penis!, all this in a cartoon which a demographic of reasearch would probly show cartoons are for kids! not dads and mums, isnt the simpsons in the same league as gaming?

As far as its a cartoon, only kids watch cartoons, just like games yeah, only kids play them.. I mean Ren and stimpy was cancelled for its pioneering risk! And all this game does is imply that its getting on FFS,

Cooper Lawrence has little respect as it is to anyone who, well knows her! And as far as the respect she may still maintain it is dwindling, at least she can console herself in the fact that she was f**king clever enough to suck some Fox boses dick to get the position before someone else did.

Snigger at that bitch.

Oh you know the ignorant t**t was handed a memo, or outraged letter or something and just ran with it. She leaped from assumption to assumption like a champion triple jumper, carrying the analogy too far, she'd probably be from sub-Saharan Africa, if making asinine assumptions was an Olympic event. Kudos to her though, if she either remains ignorant of the true content of the game, or allows herself to be educated but maintains her public stance. The biological half, and spiritual whole that was raised amongst Germans can appreciate mindless stubbornness like that...sure...I'd breed her...

And yet, the whole thing bores me...should I be surprised at their steadfastly maintained ignorance and lack of understanding? Or am I, safe in my cynicism and vitriol, the ignorant one? Perhaps they know damn well whats what and whats not...during the segment it seems as though some of them should have known better. Perhaps they're all just pandering to older America, afraid that if they show too much knowledge on the subject they'll turn off the Baby Boomers and older viewers. Seems kinda silly...pleny of peoples grandparents are comfortable with computers and video games, even in Red states. The one at the end tried feebly to refute the conception that video games are mostly for kids, but it was asserted as unquestionable fact early on. I wasn't too impressed by the limpdicked guy they got to stand in for us, either...he failed to counter the aforementioned assertion, and failed to make his points as assertively as he needed to in order to make them stick. In a case like this, where we (gamers) are unquestionably in the right, you have to turn the moral indignation up to 10. I would have been just short of frothing...in addition, another aspect of Mass Effect and the sexual content which I feel is extremely relevant was only touched on ineffectively. In order to "access" the "sexual content" you have to navigate a series of optional conversations...conversations that most pre-teens either wouldn't complete, wouldn't do correctly, or wouldn't have the patience for...

But yeah, this is garbage heaped on garbage...

Sweet, i give it a week and i bet some form of apology is released from Fox, although i hear Cooper has apologised through New York Times, due to advice from her agent because of the Amazon.com Comments linked to her book,

Maybe she will now think twice before making comments about something she has no authority on or education on and isuspect that she hasnt not only not played mass effect but has never even picked up a Controller, and i cant believe i am saying this but `EA earns a little repsect from me for how they have handled this", although that is no way an endorsement of their shining range of year by year IP`s cough NFS cough Fifa cough same ole same ole with more reflections/shadows.

From what I've seen of him before, I always thought Sessler was an annoying pillock, but that's excellent!

meh, its an affectation (the needy, annoying, slightly whiney Adam) meant to act as a foil to the assertive, attractive female co-host, Morgan Webb. When Adam isn't being "the Sessler" hes usually intelligent and incisive, I think its also a way for him to pre-emptively deflect some of the natural jealosies of his audience. "Sure he has his own show about videogames, and can stare at the gorgeous women the keep in the G4 stable...but he's such a dweeb..."

Massive Online Penetration, ftw.
