Every now and then, when SPOnG's wondering why we get mobbed by PR folk every time we get near a game developer, someone like
God of War creator David Jaffe or his mate over at Sony, Adam Orth, comes along to remind us. "Fuck
Halo", is what Mr Orth has to say.
That little gem comes from a conversation between the Jaffe and Orth, who worked with Jaffe on
Twisted Metal: Black and
Calling All Cars. Jaffe, throwing caution to the wind, decided to print said conversation on his blog.
Neither of them, it would seem, buy into the hype surrounding
Halo. Jaffe comments, "I just don't get
HALO. I don't think the story is all that special, don't think the world or characters matter much. I don't know if I am simply not 'getting it' and it really is all that...or Microsoft has simply purchased rabid fan reactions for what is a great game but nothing more."
Orth, meanwhile, finds the
Halo ad campaign with the catchphrase "Believe" a bit, well... we'll let him tell you: "that ad is insulting "belive"? come on". He goes on to explain, "well, for 1, i think it's disrespectcful to actual veterans of real wars and 2, they really expect people to become that invested in the
halo story? i guess i just really dislike
halo and that ad aint helping".
Don't think, however, that Jaffe isn't sensitive to how the exchange may make
Halo fans feel. He just doesn't care that much. "...sadly it will rile up halo fans...hope they see that I DO LIKE
HALO!" Jaffe says. "I just don't get the religious fervor and feel much of the fervor has been purchased by Microsoft. But they'll still hate me".
Orth doesn't seem too bothered, either. The conversation ends:
ADAM: actaully, i stand by what i said, you can print my name, just leave out "fuck halo"
JAFFE: shit really? Ok.
ADAM: ok, print it
fuck it
JAFFE: cool, you got it.
For more from Jaffe check out SPOnG's
Calling all Cars interview with him. He's probably going to have a PR person sleeping at his house for the next 10 years, so we might not see much of him for a while.
