Sony VP Defends Movies On UMD
Peter Dille, Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) senior vice president of marketing has spoken out against critics of the UMD movies on the PSP. He's not beyond admitting, however, that Sony initially handled the format badly as a platform for film.

Speaking in an interview, Dille said, "The movie issue you're referring to is really a function of our not handling communication with Hollywood terribly well. When the PSP came out, it was a new format, and as with a lot of new formats, what Hollywood does is back up the catalogue and say, 'Come on guys, let's release all this stuff on the new video format.' Unfortunately, we didn't do a good enough job communicating to Hollywood about who was going to be buying a PSP."

Dille went on to explain the upshot of that, saying,

“When we launched, there was a proliferation of UMD content, and it wasn't the best strategic fit with the demographic. Now we've done a better job of going back and interfacing with Hollywood and saying, 'Look, here's what we're doing, and here's what makes sense.' I think sense then, they've been a lot more selective in terms of what makes sense and what doesn't. You've seen people like Target come back on with UMD offerings. There have been some hiccups, but I think reports of the UMD's demise have been greatly exaggerated."

Dille also clarified once again that video downloads will be coming to the PSP. "I don't have a problem bringing it up, but we didn't have any announcements about that at the show”, Dille said. “What I can tell you is that we're working on it".

Sony has been on the defensive about the UMD format of late. Prior to the announcement of the new, slimmer PSP there was much speculation that Sony would do away with the format. The new PSP will, according to Sony, feature UMD, but that did not stop the PSP's senior marketing manager, John Koller, feeling the need to defend the format in the week before the announcement.

In spite of Sony's defence of movies on UMD, SPOnG has to wonder whether the advent of video download on the handheld will make UMD all but obsolete. Answers in the Forum, please.

"FFS, sony forget hollywood and concentrate on games yeah!"

Not sure if you knew, but Sony is one of the biggest players in Hollywood. It's a bit like saying: "Microsoft, forget about Windows and bring us the games!"
